Project Details

This project involved two sites and two builds, a Medical Centre and a Local Community Centre, no more than 300m from one another, located in Scartho on the outskirts of Grimsby. The original Community Centre was on the larger piece of land, so the scheme involved swapping the sites that each were built on.

To do this the users of the Community Centre had to move into a temporary building (elsewhere on the original Community Centre site), so that the demolition of the CC could take place and the new medical centre could be constructed in its place.

This temporary building had to be large enough and suitable to facilitate all activities that take place, including dance classes (so a special floor covering had to be included), and adhere to all building and fire regulations.

On completion, the users of the current surgery moved into their new building, and the demolition of the surgery then commenced for the new cc to be built. On completion of this the users of the CC can finally use their new building.

On a project such as this communication and co-ordination of information is key, as although we officially have one client, in reality it is different. The Community Centre users and their representatives, the Surgery staff and users, and the Local Council as well as the land owner/landlord all have an influence throughout the process.

The previous Community Centre was a 1970’s prefabricated concrete panelled building that was in a rundown state. The replacement on the site of the current surgery now has a glazed curtain walled entrance, a timber cladding feature next to the grey brick build. The previous MC on the other hand was an average brick built structure. Its replacement now uses Metsec and Trespa systems and includes features such as a courtyard located in the centre of the building and glass and steel canopy.
